On Saturday, you can listen live for the first time to Budapest’s new big band opening at Hősök Square. The Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFZ) welcomes the audience with the premiere of Oláh Patrik’s piece Fusion at the free open-air concert celebrating Budapest’s 150th birthday, reports MTI. In the spring, the BFZ and Budapest Metropolitan Municipality announced a competition for composers for a large orchestra overture, which evokes the 150-year-old Budapest, the unification of the three cities and the capital’s complex cultural-historical-urbanistic identity.
The competition was won by a composer who was only twenty-five years old, the Junior Prima prize winner Patrik Oláh, the author of the first mass in Lovári, who in his works usually looks for connections between authentic gypsy music and classical music.His work entitled Fusion experiments with the musical possibilities of union and fusion in order to convey the significance of the fusion that once created Budapest. The orchestra will also record the piece in the studio before the premiere, so that the details of Budapest’s new overture can be used by the capital’s institutions and companies at their events.
According to the announcement issued by the orchestra, the concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will be opened by Iván Fischer, the music director of the BFZ, and Mayor Gergely Kárácsony. The premiere of Patrik Oláh’s work will be followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major (Eroica), which he played on the BFZ’s summer tour in London, Grafenegg and Bremen. The concert on Saturday is free, the audience can take a seat on the square from 5:30 p.m., and the organizers have prepared paper chairs for more comfortable music listening.
