Budapest’s new song will be heard for the first time on Hősök square

As part of the Budapest 150 program series, a tender was announced, in which they were looking for the capital’s newest opening on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda. The winning entry was the work of Patrik Oláh, which will be presented on the second of September in Hősök square.

As we have already written about, the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFZ) is announcing a competition for composers on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda with the support of the Metropolitan Municipality. The winning entry will be presented by the Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Iván Fischer, at a large-scale open-air concert as part of the Budapest 150 program series on the second of September in Hősök square.

The tender announced in the spring was won by a young, twenty-five-year-old composer, Oláh Patrik, winner of the Junior Príma prize, who is also the author of the first mass in Lovár. In his works, the young artist often explores the connections between authentic gypsy music and classical music. In his master’s thesis, he also develops the theme of fusion, placing it in analogy with the fusion of the three city districts.

I tried to describe the hustle and bustle of Pest, the sophistication of Buda, the housing estates of Óbuda and its Roman monuments with my feelings for the three cities.

explained Patrik Oláh in the announcement sent to us.

A heroic jubilee

The BFZ also recorded the finished work in the studio before its debut on the second of September, so that it could be used in the programs of the capital’s institutions. In addition to the premiere of the new composition, the event is also the opening program of the Festival Orchestra’s 40th anniversary season. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Eroica, will also be performed at the event. He also performed the work on the summer tour of the BFZ in London, Grafenegg and Bremen, which received outstanding professional recognition.

Iván Fischer always approaches the pieces of the classical symphonic repertoire with an exciting, fresh approach

said Orsolya Erdődy, the managing director of the BFZ, in their statement sent to us. Adds:

I am sure that the BFZ performance will hold surprises for Eroica connoisseurs and will also touch those who are just getting to know the symphony – and not only because of the Hungarian verbunk motive of the final movement.

The concert on the second of September is a free event. In order to comfortably listen to music, the organizers are preparing paper chairs, so those interested can reserve a seat in the square from 5:30 p.m. The event starts at 18:30 with a welcome from Iván Fischer, the music director of the BFZ, and Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapest.
